In Karlovy Vary, an exhibition about the architecture of the spa town has begun

Karlovy Vary - The development of the architecture of Karlovy Vary from the oldest times to the present is mapped by the exhibition that has begun today at the Imperial Spa. A book by one of the authors of the exhibition, Lubomír Zeman, titled "Guide to the Architecture of Karlovy Vary," was also launched at the opening. Information panels are complemented by examples of architectural details from the private collection of historian Vladimír Dleska.
    About thirty panels depict the history of the city's architecture from the 14th century, when Karlovy Vary was founded, to the present. According to the mayor of Karlovy Vary, Petr Kulhánek (KOA), the greatest influences on the current appearance of the city were the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the socialist period, and then the period of renewed spa prosperity after 1989.
    However, the most typical for Karlovy Vary and its unique appearance is precisely the golden era of the spas at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. According to Lubomír Zeman, buildings were primarily constructed in a historicizing style during this time. "Later these were unjustly denounced, but this period is characterized by theatricality, similar to what can be seen in the Imperial Spa," Zeman stated.
    While only information about the most significant buildings and personalities of the city's architecture fit into the exhibition, Zeman's book contains descriptions of approximately 300 buildings.
    In addition to its informational value, the exhibition is also significant in that it once again makes the Imperial Spa, a threatened monument listed among national cultural monuments, accessible to visitors. The buildings now belong to the Karlovy Vary Region. Its reconstruction, costing nearly one billion crowns, depends on obtaining subsidies from the Ministry of Culture and the Regional Operational Program. The region is still waiting for a definitive stance from the ministry, and the fate of the entire Northwest Regional Operational Program is also uncertain.
