In Brno, an exhibition on baroque perspective has started

Brno - The concept of perspective in Baroque architecture and visual arts is presented in the exhibition Perspectiva artificialis, which started today concurrently at the Cabinet of the Moravian Gallery in Brno and at the Rájec castle in Blanensko. Most of the exhibited treatises, graphic sheets, and prints come from the rich Rájec library. According to Hana Doležalová from the Moravian Gallery, the exhibits are not only a demonstration of theoretical considerations about perspective but also have undeniable artistic value.
    Although the treatises contained various technical data and schematic drawings, they were not intended solely for builders as practical guides. "We can understand them as a certain new type of literature. They served for education, entertainment, reflected and shaped the conventions of the time, and served as a platform for sorting opinions on taste," stated curator Petr Ingerle. Works on perspective were sought out by contemporary scholars as well as aristocrats.
    In the library in Rájec, among 60,000 volumes, there is a considerable collection of similar books. "Each of the castle owners supplemented the library with works from the field that interested them," said curator Jana Kopecká. Perspective captivated Karel Josef Salm. At the end of the 18th century, he acquired a collection from the Brno builder František Antonín Grimm.
    "In terms of scope and focus, it exceeds the framework of Moravia and Central Europe. It consists of a set of architectural drawings, sketchbooks, manuscripts, and books on architecture, construction, mathematics, and geometry," described Ingerle, who primarily drew upon the so-called Grimm collection while creating the exhibition.
    The exhibition Perspectiva artificialis will be accessible in the Cabinet of the Moravian Gallery until August 5. "Rájec castle offers the exhibition throughout the entire summer season, including September, both as a standalone and as part of the tour circuit," Kopecká stated.
