Pilsen

Plzeň is generally not perceived as a city notable for its architectural development in modern times. However, this reality has causes more in its unfamiliarity than in the low quality of the city's architectural history. The West Bohemian Gallery in Plzeň has, in recent years, through the processing of individual themes (Adolf Loos, Hanuš Zápal, etc.), attempted with this exhibition to provide the first comprehensive view of the urban and architectural image of the West Bohemian metropolis during the era of the First Republic.

Attention is given both to the works of well-known architects including Adolf Loos and local creators (Hanuš Zápal, Bohumil Chvojka, Václav Neckář, Václav Klein, Leo Meisl, Emil Ondráček). However, it is not only about individual buildings and unrealized designs, but primarily about highlighting the unique process that the city underwent at that time. Alongside "greenfield" buildings, efforts were made to transform older buildings and entire previously devastated areas for new urban functions to build a dignified city center to the metropolis. Different conditions, while making it impossible for Plzeň to follow the example of Hradec Králové (known as the Salon of the Republic), still allowed the West Bohemian metropolis to experience its best period in urbanism and architecture in the last one and a half centuries.

The exhibition includes numerous valuable documents, models of buildings, and one of the first neon advertisements, photographs, as well as excerpts from period films; visitors will also see the original desk of architect Karel Lhota, a collaborator of Adolf Loos.

The exhibits, historical photographs, and films for the exhibition were lent by:
The Archive of the City of Plzeň, the Archive of the Plzeňský Prazdroj, a.s., the Koranda Choir of the Czechoslovak Evangelical Church in Plzeň, the Municipal Office of Plzeň, Construction Administration Department - Archive, the Museum of the City of Brno, p. o., the Museum of Art Olomouc, p. o., the National Film Archive, the Memorial of National Literature - Literary Archive, the State District Archive in Plzeň, the Study and Research Library in Plzeň, p. o., the Military Geographic and Hydrometeorological Office of General Josef Churavý, the West Bohemian Gallery in Plzeň, p. o., the West Bohemian Museum in Plzeň, p. o., library, ethnographic department, department of modern history, the Museum Dr. B. Horák Rokycany, private collections.

A book of the same name is published in connection with the exhibition (in collaboration with ZČG and the publishing house Starý most, s. r. o.).
