An exhibition of photographs by Israeli photographer Yigal Gawze, mapping the functionalist architecture of the White City in Tel Aviv.
The impetus for the creation of the photographs by Israeli photographer Yigal Gawze, Fragments of a Style, was the specific architectural aesthetics of one of Tel Aviv's neighborhoods, known as the White City. The White City is today the largest urban area built in the International style in the world. Most of the buildings, which are now estimated to number around 4000, were constructed in the 1930s by German Jewish architects who were graduates of the Bauhaus and were forced to emigrate to Palestine after the rise of Nazism.
Yigal Gawze captured facade and interior details of the buildings in his photographs, as well as individual buildings in relation to the whole of the White City. His attention to detail points to the very essence of functionalist architecture, while the second part of the photographs offers an excursion into the urbanism of this exceptional urban area. The dynamic composition and sharply conceived perspective of Yigal Gawze's photographs reference avant-garde photography. The author deliberately chooses this approach to capture the spirit of Israeli modernism.
Photographer Yigal Gawze was born in 1952 in Tel Aviv. He studied architecture at the School of Architecture in Toronto and then photography at the École Nationale Supérieure Des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. His work is exhibited worldwide. The exhibition Fragments of a Style has so far been presented in San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto, Cordoba, and Eisenstadt in Austria.
The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Embassy of the State of Israel in Prague.
