The project maps the phenomenon of the rapid rise of the young generation of Czech architectural studios through their groundbreaking projects. The selection of studios highlights the diversity of the domestic scene and disrupts the established stereotype of the straightforward development of Czech architecture. In charting the paths taken by individual studios, we seek to find a substantial turning point that predetermined the studio's subsequent work and, in many cases, was also a fundamental reason for its inception.

We are not solely interested in understanding and uncovering the mechanisms of architectural studio development; we also want to showcase the pitfalls of asserting oneself and finding a path in the creative process of the architect. From the beginning, we were interested in the relationship between the architect and the client, whether it is the architect - developer, architect - city, architect - private investor, etc. The centerpiece of the exhibition consists of short film interviews with the founders of the studios. We utilized the film medium for its authenticity, providing personal contact, personal "narration," and sharing personal experiences in the quest for significant commissions by specific architects. The aim of the BIG DEAL project is not to present a comprehensive view of the studio's work; it does not aspire to showcase everything that has been realized thus far. It seeks to reveal the background of architects' work, getting inside the working process. In this journey, BIG DEAL proclaims the opinion that the position attained on the imaginary success ladder (which is automatically equated with larger projects or the growth of the studio) cannot be the primary measure for assessing success. Although creative freedom may seem to be the counterpart of growth and success, a series of failures that each studio goes through can pay off in the strong personal expression of the architect in the future.
Maintaining authorship and ideas during the design process is a task that, in larger projects, becomes increasingly unmanageable, and it is easy for the architect-creator to fall into the role of the architect providing services. The debuts we selected present very strong creative expressions of individual authors. Only time will tell how the BIG DEAL generation will fare in larger projects. Whether it will embark on the path of providing services with an emphasis on maximizing the number of constructed square meters or the path of the architect - thinker formulating societal ideas.

The BIG DEAL project will first be presented in Serbia (the main exhibition of Czech Architecture Days in Belgrade) and Croatia, countries whose architectural scenes may follow a similar development as that of the Czech Republic after 1989. The selection of these regions also connects to the tradition of exhibitions of Czech architectural avant-garde held in the capitals of Yugoslav states in the 1930s. Thanks to them, a strong bond with Czech architectural events was created in the Balkans. The introduction will also occur on a personal level through a series of lectures. The exhibition project plans to return to the Czech Republic (Prague) in the summer of 2007.

BIG DEAL maps the paths to success of these architectural studios:

A69 - architects
(private entrepreneur and architect)
The A69 studio from Cheb was founded in 1994 by a trio of young graduates from the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague: Boris Rodčenkov, Prokop Tomášek, and Jaroslav Wertig. In its short existence, the studio has completed several projects that have attracted attention from professionals and the media. The studio does not present itself as a closed entity and showcases its work through a number of lectures and exhibitions.

HŠH architects
(public opinion and architect)
The architectural office HŠH architects was established in 1998 by Petr Hájek, Tomáš Hradečný, and Jan Šépka. After winning competitions, the young architects found themselves directly from the classrooms in the unknown environment of the media jungle, in which they soon began to navigate and promote their designs.

4A architects
(developer and architect)
4A architects represent one of the progressive Prague studios. The studio was founded in 1998. The international character of the group and different pedagogical backgrounds guarantee a variety of architectural approaches within the studio.

New Work
(private investor and architect)
The Brno studio New Work, led by architect Svatopluk Sládeček, gains attention mainly for its family houses and villas, which it perceives as works of art, not merely utilitarian buildings.

Projektil architects
(competition and architect)
The studio, led by a quartet of young architects, has recently become known as the "library studio." According to their designs, the Library and Information Center in Hradec Králové and the National Technical Library in Prague are being realized.

CCEA/ +yvette vašourkova + igor kovačević +
(education and architect)
The Centre for Central European Architecture, the first independent architecture center in the Czech Republic, was established in 2001 and sparked a reflection on contemporary architecture. The duo of architects (founders of CCEA) is hyperactively engaged in promoting architecture and architectural thinking in Central Europe, striving to find an architectural identity. Through their practical and theoretical work, they seek to strengthen the Central European position.

KRUH / Marcela Steinbachová
(education and architect)
The civic association Kruh organizes lectures, discussions, excursions, and film festivals on architecture. At the same time, it publishes materials documenting current thoughts on architecture. Young architect Marcela Steinbachová is the main figure of this organization. With all her strength, she combines her own architectural career with the operation of the non-profit organization. Currently, she has founded an architectural office called Skupina with colleagues.

OK PLAN ARCHITEKTI
(periphery and architect)
The atelier OK PLAN ARCHITEKTI was founded in 1998 by Luděk Rýzner. It is located halfway between Prague and Brno in Humpolec. Through marketing approaches and active PR, the studio has raised its profile and broadened its scope beyond Humpolec.

Knesl+Kynčl architects
(local government and architect)
The studio, established in 2001 and based in Brno, is closely connected with the local Faculty of Architecture. Its founders utilize and integrate their experiences gained from pedagogical teaching in public contracts.

architecture of the BIG DEAL exhibition
The BIG DEAL exhibition consists of 8 architectures - clearly defined objects that hide a mix of information under a purist "facade." The outdoor severity is only a shell within which contemporary Czech architecture is sought.
