Prostějov – The Prostějov City Council will discuss next week on Monday a proposal to initiate a tender for the long-awaited construction of a covered 25-meter swimming pool for approximately 750 million crowns. The councilors will meet for the last time before the municipal elections, which will take place on Friday, October 9, and Saturday, October 10. ČTK obtained this information today from the program of the city council. The current Prostějov coalition, made up of ANO, ODS, and the PéVéčko movement, has included the construction of the covered pool in its program declaration.
Due to the design of the planned pool, a local referendum was held in Prostějov this spring. Its initiators from the Prostějov Sports Union advocated for a 50-meter length pool. Out of 34,440 eligible voters, 4,474 cast valid votes in the referendum, with 3,808 supporting the 50-meter variant. However, the referendum was invalid due to low turnout. A section of opposition councilors also leans towards the 50-meter variant.
In December 2023, the council approved an investment study for the new covered pool and the preparation of the tender for project documentation. In June 2024, it then supported a change to its parameters, increasing the number of 25-meter lanes from eight to ten. The city leadership wants to accommodate competitive swimmers with this adjustment while also ensuring enough space in the pool for the public.
The city has already prepared project documentation for the 25-meter pool. Mayor František Jura (ANO) estimated in the spring, after the issuance of a building permit for this project, that the pool could open to the public at the end of next year or at the beginning of 2028. The councilors will also vote on Monday regarding the tender for the technical supervision of the builder and the coordinator for safety and health protection at work in connection with the upcoming construction of the covered pool.
Jakub Jílek from the TJ Prostějov swimming team has previously pointed out that the 25-meter pool promoted by the city leadership will not meet the demand of the public and athletes, as its capacity corresponds to the aging covered pool in Prostějov. According to him, a 50-meter pool is the standard for competitive swimming and would also significantly improve conditions for recreational swimming for the public.
The planned pool, located near the outdoor aquapark, will have two above-ground floors. The first is designated for the swimming pool with stands and a training pool with water attractions. The offer will be complemented by a whirlpool, steam sauna, waterslide, and children's wading pool. The first floor will also include changing rooms and sanitary facilities. The second floor will have saunas, a cooling pool, a whirlpool, a relaxation area, an atrium, refreshments, changing rooms, a fitness zone, and sanitary facilities.
The estimated costs for the construction of the 25-meter pool with ten lanes are currently around 750 million crowns. According to previous estimates by the councilors, the construction of a 50-meter pool would cost up to one billion crowns, and its operating costs would also be higher.
