Wallpaper* today awarded the Design Awards 2008

The British magazine Wallpaper* today announced its Design Awards. Among this year's jury members were Japanese architect Tadao Ando (66) and Donatella Versace. The previous year's awards caused a stir in the Czech Republic, especially as one of the finalists was a Czech family house. This year, no Czech architect, designer, product, or city made it to the finals.
    The best furniture designer was selected as Tokujin Yoshioka. The best restaurant reportedly is Mathias Dahlgren's Restaurant in Stockholm, and this year's best hotel is the Riva Lofts in Florence. Los Angeles took the top prize in the city category.
    The architectural world closely watched the categories of best family house and best public building, which this year were won by the Japanese weekend Ring House by the duo Makoto Takei and Chie Nabeshima, and SANAA from Tokyo for The New Museum in New York. It is worth mentioning the finalists in the family house category - including NM Villa in New York by UN Studio, the floating house by the Bouroullec brothers, a wooden villa in the Swiss Chabrey by Geninasca Delefortrie, and a beach house by Australian Sean Godsell. Among the top five public buildings were Zumthor's Bruder Klaus Field Chapel, Holl's expansion of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Centre for the Theatrical Arts in Níjar designed by the Spanish trio MGM, and the wonderful Tama Art University Library by Toyo Ito.
