The company Rockwool announced the third year of the Rockhouse 2009 competition – Czech Low-Energy House of the Year. The aim of the competition is to support and promote environmentally and economically effective low-energy and passive housing. This year, the organizers have abandoned the division into professional and student categories. Contestants can submit their projects in the categories of Project or Reconstruction. The jury will be chaired by the prominent Czech architect Eva Jiřičná. The vice-chairman will be Professor Jan Tywoniak from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague. The application deadline is February 28, 2009.

“The new division responds to the increasing number of reconstructions of family and apartment buildings, which also encourages the search for interesting architectural solutions,” says Jiří Eyberger, marketing communication manager from the organizing company Rockwool. “The savings on energy costs and environmental protection are definitely not only topics for new constructions,” adds Eyberger. In connection with the competition, the organizer has prepared a series of expert seminars on the topic of low-energy housing. The seminars will take place in October and November at the architectural and civil engineering faculties of Czech universities. For example, the Technical University of Liberec will allow students to choose the project of a low-energy house as the topic of their seminar work.

Architects, designers, construction companies, investors, students, and student teams can apply for the Rockhouse 2009 – Czech Low-Energy House of the Year competition with projects for low-energy houses and buildings. Besides architecturally interesting solutions, projects must also take into account modern trends in low-energy housing and utilize advanced Rockwool insulation materials. Completed buildings that meet these conditions can also be submitted. The electronic application form and materials for calculating energy performance, as well as other information about the competition, can be obtained on the website www.rockhouse.cz. This year, Rockwool is awarding a financial prize of CZK 100,000 to the winners in the PROJECT category and CZK 50,000 to the winners in the RECONSTRUCTION category. Media partners of the competition are the magazines ASB, STAVBA, ARCHITEKT, and ERA21. Educational partners are universities TU LIBEREC, ČVUT PRAHA, VUT BRNO, and VŠBT OSTRAVA.

Rockwool in the Czech Republic is part of the international group Rockwool International, which is the world's largest manufacturer of thermal, acoustic, and fire insulation made from stone wool. The group was founded in 1937 in Denmark and has been operating in the Czech market since 1993.
