Liberec - The Liberec City Hall has four options for the reconstruction of the left side of Sokolovské Square in the historical center of the city. In an survey, they are currently having the public assess them. CTK was informed about this today by the city hall spokesperson Zuzana Minstrová. "The options for possible implementation are the result of a discussion among architects, conservationists, and other experts," she stated. The planned reconstruction of the square concerns the area from the Secondary Medical School to the Golden Ram house. On one side, this irregularly shaped area is bordered by burgher houses, and on the other by a road that thousands of cars pass through daily. According to conservationists, Sokolovské Square should return to its original function and become once again a space designated for gathering people. "There should also be a water feature, which has historically belonged here and was removed in the 1930s when Wewerk's fountain was taken away," the spokesperson stated. Architects approached by the city would like to see noble, local materials used at this site. They are betting on stone, metal, and water. The combination of these elements, in their opinion, evokes a clean and airy feeling of the whole, not overly large space. "They see the addition in their concept as the planting of trees, continuing the alley that is being created at the Church of St. Anthony the Great in the neighboring Kostelní Street," the spokesperson mentioned. The reconstruction of Sokolovské Square should follow the repair of Kostelní Street, which the city hall wants to start as early as next year. Workers should complete all work in Kostelní Street, which leads to the square by the city hall, by December 15. The city hall will pay 6.8 million crowns for its repair. The street, belonging to the oldest part of the regional city, is expected to become more attractive not only for Liberec residents but also for tourists. There will be several references to valuable archaeological findings. For example, there will be a section of the original medieval pavement or a memorial plaque commemorating the discovery of the grave of the "oldest Liberec resident", who lived in the 14th century.
