Šlapanice – A new city center is set to be established in the place of the old industrial complex in Šlapanice, located in the Brno region. The granary will be transformed into a community and cultural center, with plans for the construction of apartment buildings and a medical center, as well as sports and children's playgrounds, a park, and open green spaces. This layout of public space was proposed by architects and urban planners from the company re:architekti, who won the architectural competition announced a year ago, said Anna Mrázová, spokesperson for Šlapanice, to ČTK.
The industrial complex will be freed for transformation in 2024. By the end of next year, a five-year remediation of the old ecological burden left from the production of tar paper in the 1930s and 1940s will be completed. Prior to that, a sugar factory operated here for several decades until 1931. Contaminated soil has already been removed, and underground water is currently being cleaned. The city has owned the six-hectare area since 2017; it was previously used for storage and small-scale manufacturing.
The granary, which is a five-story building, should be transformed first. "It will become the new cultural and social center of Šlapanice. The winning studio will begin working on the project documentation, and construction on the granary should start within five years," said Mrázová.
In the upcoming years, the area is to gradually transform to become a second city center for 7,500 inhabitants. It will include the flow of the Říčka River. According to the proposal, cultural events could be held here in the future, and people will be able to find relaxation in a new biotope or on lawns. In addition to new buildings, the architects also proposed the adaptation of the old industrial hall into a covered sports facility and an amphitheater, and there should also be a scout clubhouse.
