Idea competition of the magazine 2G: Venice Lagoon Park

Venice seems to be a suitable city for holding conceptual architectural competitions. After last year's competition for the design of the Venetian Arsenal and the conceptual bridge-museum design, another competition has been announced by the editorial office of the magazine 2G.

The magazine 2G is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its existence with this competition. One architectural competition was held by 2G at its founding in 1997, which was a design for a building for the Mies van der Rohe Foundation.
From the ongoing competition, 2G expects a number of interesting projects from students and architects under 40 years of age addressing the relationship between contemporary Venice and its inhabitants, as well as the phenomenon of global tourism.

The competition concerns the entire lagoon in which Venice is located. The area of 550 km² is bounded to the north by the Sile River, to the south by the Brenta River, to the west by a network of canals that separates the lagoon from the mainland, and to the east by a 50 km strip of beaches including Sottomarina, Pallestrina, Lido, Cavallino, and Jesolo.
The current appearance of Venice itself is the result of a development that responded to the commercial, transportation, and defense needs of this city, closely linked to the other islands in the lagoon, each having its own specific role based on its location and size - smaller islands served religious, medical, cultural, and other public utility purposes, while larger islands like Murano, Burano, or Sant'Erasmo were designated for agriculture and industry. In recent centuries, Venice has gradually lost its former role, as the city was connected to the mainland by a long bridge, smaller islands gradually lost their significance, and many functions that were once scattered throughout the lagoon were concentrated in the city itself. The lagoon began to be perceived as an empty space suitable for industry. Venice became a popular tourist destination.
The task of competitors is to ideate a project for Venice Lagoon Park - an urban rehabilitation of the entire lagoon as a network of communications and settlement with the decentralization of individual functions (in the event of a hypothetical re-colonization of this territory). Part of the proposal is to address the island of Sacca San Mattia, where an Urban Park should be created, serving as a conceptual entrance to the entire lagoon, linked to Marco Polo Airport, along with the design of several urban elements Lagoon Prototypes (docks, observation towers, etc.).

Registration for the competition is possible until October 15, 2007, and is associated with a participation fee of 30 EUR for students (or student teams) and 60 EUR for architects under 40 years old. The competition deadline is November 12, 2007.
The two best projects will be awarded 10,000 and 5,000 EUR, and their authors along with five other awarded designs will receive a one-year subscription to the magazine 2G.
