Ceske Budejovice - Ceske Budejovice will announce an architectural competition for a new design of the open-air theater in the garden of the Český Krumlov Castle. The new structure should be partially or completely dismantleable, and the technical facilities will be outside the garden. The competition could be announced in March or April, said the mayor of Ceske Budejovice, Juraj Thoma (HOPB), today to ČTK. A compromise solution must meet the UNESCO committee, otherwise the theater should disappear from the garden by 2015. "The architectural competition could be announced at the turn of the first and second quarters of this year, that is, in March or April," said the mayor. The city had already planned to announce the competition last year, but discussions of the cultural minister's working group regarding the fate of the theater were interrupted after personnel changes. On Thursday, the discussions were resumed and the participants reached an agreement that the theater could be preserved in the garden under certain conditions. The study conducted by the city, as the owner of the current theater, will cost more than two million crowns. According to Jiří Šesták, the director of the South Bohemian Theater, which operates the theater, the competition should examine the possibility of keeping the rotating theater in the same location. From his perspective, the audience capacity should remain the same. According to the static expert's opinion, the lower part of the structure with the motors could be reused. Moving the theater's facilities away from the bellarie pavilion would resolve several issues. The blocking of this monument, which is an important part of the castle garden, bothers preservationists. They are already working on its restoration. "The interiors of the bellarie have already been largely restored in recent years. Last year we began to repair the facades, primarily the ground floor sections," said Petr Pavelec, director of the regional heritage administration of the NPÚ, under which the management of the castle falls. This year, preservationists will complete a detailed restoration project for the pavilion, and in the following two years, the bellarie could be completely restored. "We want to operate it as a center for tours of the castle garden, regardless of the outcome of the negotiations regarding the theater. It is no longer possible to handle it in such a way that rehearsals will take place during the day and performances at night. There will have to be space for activities related to the castle garden," said Pavelec. The compromise solution with a dismantleable theater is based on similar examples worldwide. A similar solution is employed, for example, during theater performances in France at the Neptune Pool of the palace in Versailles or at the Chambord Castle in the Loire Valley. A petition for the preservation of the theater in its current location has been signed by thousands of people in the past. However, preservationists do not like the current theater. The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, which listed Krumlov in 1992, is also not satisfied. Representatives of the South Bohemian Region, Ceske Budejovice, and Český Krumlov have been advocating for the modernization of the scene in its current location for several years.
