Martin Strakoš: Ostravská sídliště. k historii jednoho fenoménu

The lecture will present to the audience the book of the same name, which deals with the genesis of the phenomenon of mass housing in Ostrava from the 1940s to the 1990s, published by the National Heritage Institute. The lecturer, who is also the author of the book, will demonstrate the diversity of solutions for housing estates in the specified period and introduce the most interesting Ostrava housing estates that emerged in all four sectors of the city. It will showcase functionalist housing estates in the southern and western sectors from the initial phase of housing estate construction, followed by housing estates designed in the spirit of socialist realism and, after the Stalinist period, the emerging era of late international style, concluding with the influence of postmodernism. The presentation will not be limited to stylistic aspects of construction. It will also focus on the transformations of urban planning principles, the technological principles of housing estate construction, including the obligatory phrase "panel housing estates," which may not always apply. It will address the transformations of the apartments themselves and the public spaces of the housing estates. The lecture will also illustrate how perspectives on housing estate construction changed among architects and other representatives of the professional public and what the residents of the city themselves said about housing estate development.
