The area of the Ořech café on Poříčská Street was created on the site of a collapsed wooden house by the street and a brick outbuilding with a chicken coop. The original barn was in good condition.
The goal was to design a café with a guesthouse and a small hall in the barn, where a small community center would be established.
The concept is based on local fragmentary urbanism. We built new structures on the footprints of the original buildings, while reversing their material interpretations – on the site of the wooden house, we place a single-story brick house on the ground floor with a café, featuring a gable roof with an inhabited attic containing two rooms. The exposed façade brickwork is made from recycled bricks from the original agricultural part. The ceiling is made of solid oak beams, and we also work with other raw materials inside, such as untreated steel for the bar counter… The façade has a rough plaster that contrasts with the smooth sloping edges of the openings. Thus, an archetypically simple mass is created.
In place of the brick agricultural building, we instead placed a visually lighter two-story wooden structure for facilities and accommodation.
We reshaped the barn and broke through new large entrances from the yard and exits to the terrace. The barn is newly plastered on the outside, while we exposed its walls on the inside to reveal the brick structure.
In the center is a yard that has largely been newly paved and laid with granite cubes obtained from surrounding reconstructions. The name and character of the space is given by the existing walnut tree that provides pleasant shade in the summer. The yard serves both the visitors of social events in the barn and the café visitors – indeed, these groups and functions successfully mix and support each other. The yard is connected to the street by a passage that can be used even when the café is closed – the passage visually ties to the sidewalk in the perpendicular street and serves as an entrance to the café space.
