Two new minimalist cabins by architects from MA Studio offer a modern retreat at the interface of a vineyard and Podyjí National Park. In an economical design that respects the surrounding nature, they blend the beauty of wood and stone. With a panoramic view of Znojmo, the Kravák Cabins provide an ideal space for relaxation and nature exploration.
In a strictly regulated, protected area and on a steep slope at Kraví hora in Znojmo, two original cabins have emerged, offering a minimalist space full of thoughtful and clever solutions. For the architects, the location of the building was both a challenge and an inspiration.
"The terrain, views, and overall context of the place determined how we approached the volume, shape, and placement of both cabins. The basis is a firmly embedded reinforced concrete structure, which allows for a delicate and lightweight wooden construction even in such a location," explains Dan Merta from the MA Studio collective.
The dominant feature of the exterior is a simple gabled roof and facades made of dark folded metal, which also appears on other elements of the property. The garden and terrace are designed to directly connect with the terrain and not appear artificial.
Clever solutions for every centimeter
The cabin space is designed to accommodate everyone. It is not only aesthetically pleasing but also fully functional and cozy. Every element has its place and purpose. The combination of furniture, hidden storage spaces, and smart solutions ensures that visitors will feel comfortable and relaxed.
"The materials used in the interior draw from the atmosphere of the surrounding nature, aiming to let the beautiful surroundings stand out as much as possible. Therefore, we chose clean lines and also a generous glazed gable with a sliding portal, which keeps the panorama of Znojmo present in the interior. Wood brings warmth and a pattern that transforms throughout the day with the light. Stone adds strength and a timeless character to the space," describes architect Dan Merta.
Considering the limited space, the sleeping area is placed under the gabled roof and is supplemented with storage spaces. This leaves ample room in the lower space for a kitchenette, a fold-out sofa, a bathroom with a shower and toilet, and additional storage areas. The thoughtfully designed terrace further enhances the usable area.
"We took great care in selecting every detail – from light fixtures to handles in wood. The goal was for the interior to support a calm atmosphere and resonate with nature. You will find a refuge here that is inspiring, functional, and calming, where you can breathe without worries," says Merta.
Sustainable yet comfortable
Not only are they modern and comfortable, but they are also designed with sustainability in mind. Part of the project includes a retention tank for water, as efficient water management is very important in this area. The comfort of using both cabins is further enhanced by a complete smart home system implemented in collaboration with Voix.cz. Smart heating ensures an ideal temperature without unnecessary consumption, energy-efficient LED lighting complements natural light, and solar panels cover most of the cabins' energy needs.
"We believe that sustainability is not a compromise, but a way to live more simply and considerately, without losing comfort. Every stay in the cabin thus brings not only relaxation for guests but also a smaller impact on the landscape that surrounds the place," adds Dan Merta.
The result of this MA Studio project is discreet, sustainable, and maximally functional architecture that offers a complete base on a minimal area, connects modern approaches with traditional materials, and becomes a sensitive part of the exceptional place above Znojmo.
