The new store hhstyle.com / casa looks more like a parked invisible aircraft Stealth. Few would guess the name of the author of this giant origami made of black sheet metal. Tadao Ando has been famous since the 1970s for his strict forms and exclusive use of glass and exposed concrete. Over time, Ando has also experimented with wooden structures, but that he could loosen up like this would be guessed by very few.
The hhstyle.com/casa store is located on Cat Street in the fashionable Tokyo district of Harajuku, right next to another existing store hhstyle.com designed by Kazuyo Sejima. The new store contrasts not only with Tadao Ando’s previous work but also stands out significantly in terms of its surface, scale, and color from its immediate surroundings. Another phenomenon that is missing here, unlike other Ando buildings, is natural light. Japanese handling of light is specific. It can get by with very little. They do not feel the need to flood interiors with daylight like we do, but in this store, the lighting comfort is taken care of almost exclusively by spotlights (except for three triangular skylights). A narrow slit along the sidewalk serves more as a display window. Once you climb up two concrete steps, you can view the offered assortment through this window. It must be admitted that the average customer of this store will probably not shyly peek through the “crack in the fence.” On the other hand, it must be acknowledged that the house is surrounded by many dilapidated stores catering to clientele who cannot afford most of the products being sold, and they may be eager to take a peek.
hhstyle.com is a combination of an online and brick-and-mortar store whose history dates back to 2000. Although most orders are made online, the physical presence and the opportunity to feel the goods adds credibility to the online store. Upon entering, you will see as sharply defined features as the store has from the outside. The dark smooth metal plates are, however, replaced inside by white-painted corrugated metal. The items for sale (such as luxury furniture, lighting, and other high-quality home accessories) are showcased in a single generously divided space with several platforms connected by staircases. The central atrium is dominated by concrete frames with triangular profiles. You feel more like you are in a gallery showcasing design gems from the 20th century rather than a traditional store.
If you continue down the street, you will soon encounter all those transparent and famous architect-adorned fashion boutiques of world designers. Perhaps in reaction to them, Ando decided to create something so unexpected from him, or alternatively, by negating their exhibitionism, assembled a massive origami that is closed in on itself. However, I do not think this building heralds a new direction for Ando's architecture.
