In Jablonec nad Nisou, the construction of a transport terminal worth 470 million crowns has begun

Jablonec nad Nisou – Construction of a transport terminal began today in Jablonec nad Nisou. The project, costing 470 million crowns, is the largest investment project in the modern history of the city, which has been in preparation for over ten years. The transport hub will be built by Eurovia CZ in cooperation with CL-Evans, and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2028. The terminal will connect public transport, regional bus services, and in the future will allow transfers to trams and trains, said Mayor Miloš Vele (ODS) to ČTK.

The terminal will be constructed on the site of the former market. "In recent years, we have been using this place as emergency parking, because the basement areas are in such a condition that they can serve no other purpose," Vele stated. "It is true that there was a time when we wanted to demolish it, but in the end, we said we would wait for the construction of the terminal and combine it together so that we do not burden the area unnecessarily with construction work," he added. Residential development is planned for the site of the current bus station in the future.

The design of the terminal is the work of the Prague studio Domyjinak architects, now DMNK, which won an open urban-design competition in 2018. The transport hub will connect city, regional, supra-regional, and international bus transport with rail transport. In the future, the tram line from Liberec is also expected to terminate at the terminal, with an extension of approximately 800 meters from its current terminus at Tyršovy sady being prepared by the Liberec transport company.

"The newly built terminal will support easier access to jobs, services, and education for residents of Jablonec nad Nisou and surrounding municipalities. It will also cultivate and utilize the entire neglected urban block around the former market," said Deputy Mayor Jakub Chuchlík (Pirates). The solution includes modifications to the waterfront of the Lužická Nisa River, where a landing stage will be built on the right bank, and a park with rest stairs that will allow access to the water will be created on the left bank.

According to the original plans, the terminal should have already been built, but the preparation has been prolonged, increasing the cost. The city council has restricted the project, thus the originally planned underground parking and footbridge to the train stop will not be included. These changes were criticized today by former Deputy Mayor Lukáš Pleticha (former ČSSD), who was involved in preparing the project. He stated that it took more than a year to process the architectural competition brief, and the terminal was meant to concentrate the negative impacts of traffic in one place. "After ten years, we come to the conclusion that the bus station is simply being moved and there will be benches in the park. For that amount of money, we will have a designer booth for ticket sales for half a billion," Pleticha added.

The city council will finance the construction from a half-billion crown loan, which the councilors approved at the beginning of last year. According to Vele, about 100 million is promised to the city from European funds through the Integrated Territorial Investments program for the Liberec – Jablonec agglomeration (ITI).
