Ostrava - The most populous district of Ostrava, Jih, wants to revitalize public spaces around the Hrabůvka housing estate in the coming years. The regeneration includes the area from the shopping center on Horní Street through the space along Dr. Martínka Street to the nearby church. The modifications will cost tens of millions of crowns, said city hall spokesperson Gabriela Gödelová to ČTK.
"The regeneration of the Hrabůvka housing estate is a project divided into five phases. The first phase involves Náměstí Jih, where construction work valued at approximately 80 million crowns is currently underway ... the completion should be in early 2020," said Deputy Mayor Jan Dohnal (ODS) to ČTK. The square, which is set to become the new center of the district, is being created by transforming the public space in front of the shopping center known as Železňák. It will also include a new information center building with public restrooms and a roofed public space for cultural events.
Next year, the regeneration of areas and greenery around the Savarin building is planned for about 12 million crowns. The adjustment of the space in front of the polyclinic is also planned, which the district could begin within two years. Documentation for this part of the project is currently being prepared. Last year, however, the district reconstructed the parking lot in this location. 70 perpendicular parking spaces were created on an area exceeding 4,000 m². The reconstruction cost over 10.5 million crowns.
In 2021, the space between Dr. Martínka Street and the local elementary schools is also expected to be modified. Park improvements and a water feature called "Jezírko" are planned, although this has drawn criticism from some residents. They fear that the attraction will attract, for example, homeless people. According to Dohnal, the project will not be funded by the district but directly by the city.
"The last phase includes the area between Savarin and the church in Hrabůvka, where we currently have a study prepared that proposes, for example, the reconstruction of the existing football field," added Dohnal. The district expects costs of around 12 million crowns, and this part is planned for after 2021.
