Brno – 63 teams from many countries wanted to propose the new building of the Brno City Hall on Benešova Street. Based on the submitted portfolios, the competition jury selected 11 architectural teams from eight countries. They will now participate in an urban planning and architectural competition for the design of the new building. The winner could be known in July, said Jan Tesárek, director of the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno, which is organizing the competition, in a press release today.

The number of interested parties is considered large by the city. "This is evidence that the professional public is greatly interested in the construction of this building. The jury thus had the opportunity to choose from quality teams with experience in designing similar buildings. As a result, we expect a design that will complement the urbanism and architecture of the ring road and elevate the level of the currently neglected location near the historical center of the city. Upon its completion, the functioning and accessibility of the Brno City Hall for the public will significantly improve," stated councilor Petr Bořecký.

The building will be located adjacent to the current City Hall at Malinovského Square, close to the central building authority. The location is well accessible by public transport as well as individual vehicle traffic. The office is to be comfortable for both the public and employees. A key function will be the integration of counter workplaces, the so-called front office, especially related to agendas associated with resident registration, issuing identity cards and passports, vehicle registration, and driving licenses. The building will also include standard office workplaces for other departments of the City Hall.

"We hope that the diversity of views from the architectural teams from the Czech Republic and worldwide will bring a completely new quality of environment to the city's inhabitants as well as our employees. A modern office that will be transparent, comfortable, and offer quality working background for around 550 employees. In the first phase, mainly the counter workplaces would move here, so Brno residents wouldn't have to go to multiple places around the city to take care of their affairs,” said the secretary of the City Hall, Oliver Pospíšil. In the future, the building could also grow and create a base for the entire office. "In addition to comfort for residents, it will also bring economic savings, because currently, we have to rent some spaces,” he added.

With the decision to invite the selected teams and exclude other participants, the competition enters its key phase. "In it, the teams will develop specific solutions, from which the jury will select the best. By July, it should be clear about the winning proposal, which we will subsequently present to the public at an exhibition,” Tesárek informed.
