Prague - The Baroque castle in the Central Bohemian village of Svojšice will no longer serve as a home for individuals with chronic mental illnesses and intellectual disabilities. The Prague City Hall, which owns the castle, is now looking for new uses for it. At the same time, it will remove it from the ownership of its contributory organization Domov Svojšice. Councilor Milena Johnová (Prague Sobě) told reporters today. The city has already relocated clients from the castle, which is in poor condition.

"Last year, it became clear that the technical condition of the building is dangerous for providing social services. Today it is vacated. We will prepare a proposal for further use in a way that corresponds with the rest of the service that is still provided in Svojšice in the form of supported housing for about 15 to 18 people," said Johnová.

The castle has a poorly maintained facade, gutters, and windows. The technical infrastructure, including an outdated wastewater treatment plant, is inadequate. The internal layout for living is poorly designed, as clients do not have sufficient privacy due to rooms that can accommodate up to six beds. The staff facilities are also inadequate.

A review of the electrical installations revealed that they pose a danger to residents and staff of the home. There is no current electrical installation diagram, and descriptions of the distribution boards are outdated. "The original installation is laid on flammable material without the use of fire-resistant pads," the document approved by the councilors states.

If the city fails to find an appropriate use for the castle, it will also consider selling it. However, according to Johnová and Property Councilor Jan Chabr (TOP 09), that is the last option for what to do with the castle.

In Domov Svojšice, a financial analysis was conducted in 2019. The audit revealed irregularities, and the city dismissed the then-director Vítězslav Forman. He was replaced by Martin Kahánek. The home offers social services to adults who have reached the age of 19. It provides housing for clients who, due to their mental or intellectual disabilities, require regular assistance from others. The services are also intended for individuals with elderly and other types of dementia.
