Brno will build a waiting room at the lower station for 3 million CZK

It will offer space for food trucks with refreshments and coffee, outdoor seating, and design containers for waiting areas and exhibitions. The idea to revitalize the area in front of the station, which sees thousands of people daily since the limitations at the main station, comes from the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno (KAM). Brno's "Waiting Room" is expected to be open from spring to autumn, during the train service disruptions. The city will invest nearly three million crowns into the project. On Wednesday, January 9, the City Council of Brno approved the plan.
"Due to the train service interruption, thousands of people pass through the lower station daily, but its surroundings have long been neglected, and many locals tend to avoid this area. We want to change that. The Waiting Room is meant to not only provide greater comfort for travelers but also to show people that decades of neglected wasteland in the city center can be transformed into an interesting cultural and social space," said Michal Sedláček, director of the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno.
The Waiting Room will emerge on the land of Brno Communications along Rosická Street. The city plans to place eight temporary design containers here, which will be rented long-term and used for other events as well. The containers will house a waiting area with information boards, wireless connection, charging outlets for phones or computers, and sanitation facilities. Some containers will be used as exhibition spaces for local producers or as an information point for the upcoming new South District. Refreshments will be provided through mobile food trucks. The remaining area will be fitted with lawns by the Public Greenery of the City of Brno, where seating, relaxation, or picnics will be possible during the warmer months.
"We have tried to come up with content that will be financially and organizationally sustainable for the city. Given that these areas have been neglected for decades, it will first be necessary to stabilize them and build the required infrastructure and networks. If there is public interest, we will expand the Waiting Room with additional cultural events," added Sedláček. The project also involves Brno Communications, the Public Greenery of the City of Brno, and the Tourist Information Center. KAM will ensure the project preparation of the containers, engineering work, and the selection of furniture.
