Previously, it was a dark attic where unused items were stored. Today, it has transformed into a pleasant living space that is literally flooded with light. This was achieved through a glass roof and the use of several skylights. This very successful renovation of the attic space took place in an apartment building from the 1930s in Vienna.

Glass Roof - a Good Idea and Great Construction
The basic idea of the entire renovation was to create an interior that would have a calming effect, in which all architectural elements used are harmoniously balanced. At the same time, it aimed to evoke a sense of limitless space in this studio apartment. Therefore, all non-load-bearing walls were first removed, creating one large open living room. However, the most remarkable aspect is particularly the solution for the roof. Half of the roof is covered with insulated glass panels measuring 4 x 1 m, allowing plenty of light into the room. Even the two transverse beams are made of glass blocks, enhancing the visual impression and optical properties of the glass roof.

The system of large skylights VELUX type GGU with a polyurethane finish underscores the horizontal line, which is followed by glass shelves of the library. The glass connecting joints on the library and the mirrored effects creating individual glass surfaces serve as unifying elements.

Materials and Colors Used in the Interior
After careful consideration and assessment of the entire project, the color white in an ivory shade was chosen for all interior elements. This color scheme applies to carpets, stone floor coverings, as well as all painted surfaces. White skylights VELUX type GGU complement all of this harmoniously. Glass predominates in the interior - transverse glass beams and the fireplace is entirely surrounded by a glass wall. Other materials are used only sparingly. The project authors intentionally chose glass because it allowed them to enhance the overall impression and maintain stylistic coherence. Above all, they met the requirement for ensuring sufficient light.

The attic space in Gloriettegasse in Vienna is a prime example of the flexibility of attic spaces and their potential using natural daylight. The steel door handles and the use of glossy colors only emphasize the overall cool atmosphere of the space, its elegant minimalism, which in no way appears stark because it consistently uses only quality materials.

Storage Spaces - Traditional Use of Attic Spaces
This project demonstrates that attic spaces in buildings from the early 20th century can be effectively transformed into high-quality housing, where there is no need to make any compromises in terms of space or light. Here and there, someone finds the courage (and sufficient financial resources) to realize a terrace or garden on the roof of older buildings, but such projects are rare. Generally speaking, however, it can be said that a sensitive renovation of attic space, including modifications that illuminate the entire area and ensure good ventilation, can transform any attic space located in an older building from the last century into modern housing that meets the demanding requirements of 21st-century living.
