Lightway light guides between aircrafts

Lightway was used during the opening of the check-in hall of the new North terminal at Prague-Ruzyně Airport.

The company Bitumen & Plastic, s.r.o. provided its business partners Skanska and Metrostav a.s. with the largest one-time delivery of Lightway tubular daylighting devices, totaling 151 pieces.
In addressing this challenging project, the Lightway tubular daylighting device was suitable for use for several reasons.
Lightway technology utilizes the concept of solid tubes, whose optical super-reflective layer can bring daylight over long distances with minimal losses. Lightway is installed in interstitial spaces where skylights cannot be applied.

An important factor is also the favorable properties of Lightway concerning thermal transmittance. Unlike conventional point or strip skylights, the use of Lightway does not lead to such high thermal losses. In summer, on the contrary, it prevents overheating of the spaces.


The designer's requirement was clear. To bring daylight into the internal spaces in amounts corresponding to hygiene standards. The project addressed the areas of a healthcare facility - the background of treating doctors, where the demands for quality and quantity of natural light are very strict. Based on these parameters, the company Bitumen & Plastic, s.r.o. prepared a lighting-technical report, according to which it created a proposal for the precise location and number of Lightway daylighting devices.
The implemented Lightway daylighting devices with tube lengths of 3.5 meters bring natural light from the roof structure through interstitial spaces with various technical installations to the drywall ceiling of the airport interiors, where they terminate with a diffuser.
Another implemented part consists of the operations of the dispatch center and hotel communication corridors. The Lightway daylighting devices in these areas are a significant element in terms of saving electrical energy.


In the terminal itself, Lightway has been used to illuminate the communication corridor and the entrance hall. Their number and performance ensure the supply of sufficient amounts of daylight.

The two-story solution of Terminal North will expand areas for commercial use - new restaurants, bars, shops, and other services will be added, thanks also to Lightway technology.
