Discussion

The current issue of the journal Architecture & Urbanism maps the influence of computational technologies and the digitalization of architectural tools on contemporary architectural practice and research (not only) in Central Europe. The editors of the issue, Imro Vaško and Shota Tsikolyiav, present a spectrum of research and projects that do not focus solely on the possibilities of using computational tools but which could not have emerged at all without them, or would at least look completely different. In a discussion with the journal's editor-in-chief, Henrieta Moravčíková, they will attempt to clarify how the contemporary conception of the world as an open dynamic system changes architectural thinking. They will address questions such as what open systems, soft systems, generative processes, or bottom-up methods mean in today's architectural research and practice and what their potential is for expanding knowledge and solving real challenges in our world.

Guests:
Imrich Vaško leads the studio A III at VŠUP in Prague. After returning from a Fulbright scholarship at Yale University, he founded the Laboratory of Architecture at VŠU in Bratislava. He has served as a visiting professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has lectured and been a critic at Columbia University, Pratt Institute, RICE, Cornell University, CCNY, Universität für angewandte Kunst, and the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna. He co-organized international architectural events with Daniel Libeskind, Greg Lynn, Monika Mitášová, Marian Zervan, and many others. He collaborated with Jan Tabor and Wolf D. Prix on the WI:BRA project. He is engaged in conceptual and visionary architecture, urbanism, installations, and is interested in the trends of Central European architecture and parallel modernism.

Shota Tsikoliya serves as an assistant professor at studio A III and lectures in the international CIEE program, presenting a cycle on Science, Engineering Technology in Global Architectural Design. He studied at the University of Stuttgart and the AA School of Art and Design in Prague. He is a co-founder of the architectural studio Collarch. He leads and co-organizes various workshops focused on innovative technologies in architecture. He is the editor of the recently published publication Academic Platforms in Computational Design, where he compares the results of MOLAB studies at the Faculty of Architecture CTU and A III at VŠUP with research platforms of European architectural schools.

Henrieta Moravčíková is the editor-in-chief of the journal Architecture & Urbanism, leading the Department of Architecture at the Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava. She serves as a professor of the history and theory of architecture at the Faculty of Architecture STU in Bratislava. She is the chairwoman of the Slovak working group of DOCOMOMO, focusing on research and safeguarding the heritage of the modern movement. She is the author of numerous book and journal publications released at home and abroad, such as Architecture of Slovakia in the 20th Century, Bratislava: Atlas of Settlements, and Architect Friedrich Weinwurm. She addresses theory, history, and criticism of architecture.

The journal Architecture & Urbanism is the only scientific journal in the Czech Republic and Slovakia registered in the prestigious scientific database Current Contents. It focuses on the theory, history, philosophy, and culture of architecture and urbanism in the 20th and 21st centuries. It deals with the relationship of architecture and urbanism to art, technology, and the environment. It publishes results from sociology and psychology of architecture and urbanism, social ecology, findings from environmental technology research, and other fields contributing to the development of theoretical knowledge in architecture and urbanism. It publishes articles on the teaching of architecture and urbanism, reviews of professional books, as well as information and reports on significant scientific and artistic events. The journal Architecture & Urbanism is published by the Department of Architecture at the Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava in collaboration with the Institute of Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague.

A&U talks: a discussion format of the Department of Architecture at the Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, which presents a wide audience with the current research published on the pages of the journal Architecture & Urbanism through invited local and international guests.
