An international conference "Creative Community Planning" will take place in Pilsen from November 5 to 7, 2009, welcoming eighty people from fourteen European countries.
The conference, organized by the Center for Community Work in collaboration with the international organization British Council, the city of Pilsen, and non-profit organizations CLES (UK) and Dodo ry (Finland), focuses on sharing experiences in engaging the public in urban development planning, particularly within the framework of the international Creative Cities project. Pilsen was introduced to one part of the project, the Future City Game, in June 2008, becoming one of the first cities in Europe to implement this game, themed Pilsen - City of Culture 2015. Due to the significant interest in the event, an additional four games were held in the city districts of Pilsen throughout the year. To date, the Future City Game has been conducted in four other Czech cities - České Budějovice, Ostrava, Hradec Králové, and Roudnice nad Labem. The Future City Game is a project of teamwork that stimulates new ways of thinking and activities aimed at improving life in cities. It represents a new creative way of engaging the public in urban planning/life, while also serving as a means of international exchange of experiences and collaboration. The goal of the game is to come up with ideas on how to improve the quality of life in the city, its part, or at a higher regional level. To date, this method has been utilized in more than 10 countries of the European Union.
The aim of the conference is to map the problems of modern European cities and to collaboratively seek creative solutions. The Future City Game will also be presented as a method that offers the advantage of exchanging experiences among European countries participating in the British Council project.
The conference is intended not only for players and cities that participated in the project. Some parts of the program are dedicated and open to all interested parties on the subject, representatives of state administration and non-profit organizations from the Czech Republic as well as from all over Europe. Simultaneous translation of foreign contributions into Czech will be provided.
