We would like to invite you to the symposium Art-Technology-Politics: Bauhaus as a Phenomenon of a Pivotal Time, which will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2019, at 6:00 PM in the small hall of the FA VUT in Brno (room A118, Poříčí 5, Brno). The symposium is held on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus school. Bauhaus emerged during a pivotal time. Art and crafts had to cope with the rise of mass industrial production, the emergence of numerous new technologies, and the relationship of humans to them, and Bauhaus furthermore had to contend with the growing culturally conservative fascism. Today, we also face similar challenges: we live in a time of rapid digitalization and robotization, and we also confront the need to transition to sustainable management. New technologies are changing at a rapid pace, along with human interactions, and society itself is becoming fragmented. What is the role of architecture, art, and design in addressing these challenges? What can we learn from the successes and failures of Bauhaus for our time? What can be defined as a success or a failure of Bauhaus? These and other questions will be answered by artist and educator Pavel Karous, sociologist Ondřej Lánský, political scientist Kateřina Smejkalová, and historian of architecture and curator Šárka Svobodová. You can register for the symposium here. Admission is free.
