On Wednesday, April 23, 2014, a new series of public lectures on the history of art titled Reflections of Everyday Life in Art will be launched at the Library of the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava. Its ambition is to vividly present the artistic depiction of the entire human life experience from the cradle, through the productive working age, to the end of human life, and its reflection in the art of the gravestone.

The new series of art history events is prepared by Renata Skřebská, an art historian and curator of the Ostrava Regional Gallery. The first lecture is titled “Architectural Plastics and the Attributes of Work – The Theme of Work in Sculpture” and will begin on April 23 at 4:30 PM in the gallery library at Poděbradova Street 12, where the Documentation and Administration Center of GVUO is located.

The theme of Wednesday's lecture will focus on the issue of work in art, emphasizing the contemporary fascination with technology. We will focus on the attributes of various professions from industry and commerce to intellectual activities and agricultural professions, as well as the transformations of their artistic representations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The lecture will also address the reflection of this theme in sculpture and painting in Czech territory, with references to the European context.

The series of art history events titled Reflections of Everyday Life in art will complement the existing range of popular educational programs that GVUO has been preparing for the public for several years. It will join the well-liked series of lectures by Marek Zágora The Artwork as a Source of Knowledge About Life in the Middle Ages and the series of programs by Gabriela Pelikánová The Webs of Lives – Untangling the Fates of Prominent Czech Artists, with which it will alternate. In even months, currently in April and June, Renata Skřebská will present from the series Reflections of Everyday Life in Art, while in odd months, currently in May, Gabriela Pelikánová will lecture on the life of some Czech artist.

The lecture Architectural Plastics and the Attributes of Work – The Theme of Work in Sculpture will begin on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at 4:30 PM in the GVUO Library at Poděbradova Street 12. Admission to the lecture is free.
