A one-day trip to interesting buildings in Polish Silesia and a tour of the Museum of Architecture in Wroclaw with expert commentary is a welcome opportunity to take a look not only at "what is being built by our neighbors," but also a chance to establish new contacts and primarily – to closely experience an institution that is professionally and long-term dedicated to the "interpretation" of architecture. Silesia has much to offer, it has connections to build upon, as demonstrated by the initiative Triple-Headed Dragon, in which CNA participates. However, Silesia is a region not only of "dying beauty" but also a land where new and vibrant beauty is born. That we don't hear much about it in our area? Well, join us for a full-day trip to Polish Silesia. When? On Friday November 23, 2008, departure by bus at 7:00 AM from the parking lot opposite the House of Culture of the City of Ostrava at 28th October street, return in the evening. The destination of our journey will be Wroclaw (the current Wroclaw in Poland) and the local Museum of Architecture (www.ma.wroc.pl), we will have the opportunity to walk around the city and see significant buildings from its pre-war flourishing, among which belong primarily Centennial Hall (one of the most significant construction projects of the 20th century, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, designed by Max Berg, 1913), Petersdorff department store (Erich Mendelsohn, 1927), administrative buildings (e.g., Hans Poelzig, 1913), exemplary "settlement" WUWA (showcasing living forms from the then German functionalist avant-garde: Hans Scharoun, Adolf Rading, Heirich Lauterbach, etc., 1929). Furthermore, our route will allow us to at least glimpse the successes of contemporary Polish architecture, e.g., the new Wroclaw University of Technology building or a private villa in Opole (winner of the global WAN House of the Year 2006 competition, designed by Robert Konieczny). Our expert guide will be a connoisseur of Silesian architecture, Ing. Arch. Tadeáš Goryczka, and specialists from the local Museum of Architecture will guide us through.
