IPR invites you to the first edition of the international conference on landscape architecture, Next Landscapes. The world's leading figures in the field will participate. The field of landscape architecture has gained public attention in recent years, particularly in relation to climate change. An active approach to addressing environmental issues in the city is part of most projects of the Institute of Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague (IPR). For this reason, IPR decided to organize the first edition of the landscape architecture conference, Next Landscapes, on October 13 and 14, 2021, which will connect world leaders in landscape design, rainwater management, urban agriculture, as well as culture, architecture, and urbanism. The conference aims to present approaches that landscape architecture can offer for the future of urban and suburban landscapes amid significant challenges and crises that cities face. It will showcase international projects at various scales and provide space for discussion about the future of landscape architecture as a discipline. “The role of the landscape architect is crucial in addressing current crises and challenges. No interdisciplinary team can do without this profession, as it can connect seemingly incompatible technical, ecological, and humanitarian worlds. Proof of this is the blue-green infrastructure that we strive to implement in most projects we work on at IPR. Just look at how we plan, for example, the revitalization of Seifert Street,” says IPR Director Ondřej Boháč.
The conference has confirmed the participation of renowned names in the field, including: Mette Skjold (SLA) is a partner and CEO at the world-renowned firm SLA, which has been engaged in sustainable urban planning for over 15 years, not only in the areas of parks and public spaces. SLA participated in one of the most comprehensive and influential climate change adaptation projects, the Cloudburst Management Plan in Copenhagen. Tao Zhang (SASAKI) works in the field of ecological design and aims to bridge the gap between practice, science, and research. In science and research, he seeks inspiration that is significant for his subsequent creative expression. He believes that projects should be comprehensive in aesthetics and functionality. Tao is an integral part of Sasaki's strong international team and has contributed to a number of award-winning projects. Matthew Potteiger is a professor of landscape architecture at Syracuse University, USA. His teaching, research, and community engagement focus on the intersection of agricultural production and landscape. He explores how the food we eat shapes the ecology, public spaces, and social life of our landscape. Other notable guests will include: Michael Schwarze-Rodrian, Helen Marriage, Ingo Kowarik, David Kloet, Helge Herbst, and others. Among the most significant landscape projects that the city of Prague addresses primarily from an environmental perspective are a series of projects in the river landscape of Prague, such as the planned suburban park Soutok, the upcoming competition for Rohanský Island, the revitalization of Štvanice Island, revitalization of the Vltava promenade, Holesovice waterfront with the Water Park, and the concept of Císařský Island. Individual projects address not only the planting of trees and issues of microclimate, biodiversity, and recreation but also often flood protection. For example, by widening the channel on Císařský Island, flood models have shown not only a local reduction in flood levels by dozens of centimeters but also a positive influence as far as the center of Prague. However, the topic is also reflected in the proposal for the new zoning plan – the Metropolitan Plan. This focuses, among other things, on the creation and expansion of parks, defining the landscape interface, and thus on protecting the open landscape. The conference will take place online from the Center for Architecture and Urban Planning (CAMP) on October 13 - 14, 2021. Admission is free, and tickets for the event are available on the GoOut network. The main organizer of the conference is IPR in cooperation with the NEXT Institute, SZKT, and ČAKA.
