Marek Pokorný and Jakub Adamec: Bauhaus/PLATO - lecture at Gallery VI PER
Gallery VI warmly invites you to another presentation by representatives of the contemporary art gallery PLATO Ostrava, who will present a significant phase of their activities in the former Bauhaus DIY store in the center of Ostrava (2018–2024).
PLATO had nearly 5000 m² of space available for exhibitions, programming, and educational and community activities. This was a temporary venue until the neighboring historical slaughterhouse from the late 19th century was renovated, which became the permanent home of the gallery in the fall of 2022.
Through the programming offered, contemporary art could be perceived and contemplated in the context of other artistic fields and scientific disciplines. There were series of music focused on contemporary experimental electronics or contemporary art music, film screenings, lectures and debates, meetups for parents with children, mineralogy events, and gatherings for people experiencing grief. The Summer Academy of Contemporary Art for educators was regularly organized here, and you could also attend the School of Thought, the School of Forgetting, the School of Expressions, or the Critical Styling symposium. After the main activities moved to the new premises in 2022, the Bauhaus space was primarily utilized by other institutions, schools, platforms, communities, and individuals until the end of June 2024. Due to its activities, Bauhaus became an acclaimed community center of European significance and a model example of how to meaningfully revitalize a brownfield site. Currently, the building awaits demolition, as the owner of the property, the city of Ostrava, plans new construction here in the long term.
PLATO, after its nomadic phase when it temporarily resided in Bauhaus, operated as an Office for Art in a former textile shop (2017–2018) and as a grant project in Gong in the Lower Vítkovice area (2013–2016), and since the fall of 2022 has been based in the center of Ostrava in the historically protected former municipal slaughterhouses. PLATO provides support to everyone who wants to understand the contemporary era in broader contexts. Its complexity and richness are reflected through art—in an international context and at the highest possible level. In addition to exhibitions, public programs, and residencies, the PLATO team prepares programs for families and various educational activities for all school levels. It operates the publishing platform Octopus Press. Special emphasis is placed on issues of feminism, ecology, and social justice. On both sides of the gallery spreads the Garden of Presence, which utilizes practical principles of permaculture and is gradually developed together with artists and visitors.

HouseEurope! is an initiative bringing together citizens, institutions, and groups of residents in Europe, seeking a way to rationally and positively favor and prioritize renovations over demolitions in today's construction practices. The initiative aims to prepare effective EU legal regulations that would facilitate the renovation and transformation of existing buildings, supporting their affordability and social access. Many architectural firms, public and private institutions (including the Czech Chamber of Architects), and thousands of citizens have already joined the initiative. In the lecture cycle, we would like to introduce the local audience to possible strategies, tools, and themes related to renovations and reconstructions at the local scale, based on a selection of six Czech and Slovak speakers.
