The year 2007 became a turning point for the topic of architectural competitions. Thanks to the outcome of one competition and its savvy media promotion, a wide audience was abruptly drawn into the difficult issue that architectural competitions undoubtedly represent. In various social strata, another engaging conversation topic emerged.
However, the impact of the increased interest in the new construction of the National Library is double-edged. Without questioning the social significance of architectural competitions for a more democratic functioning of the entire society, discussions too often and easily slide into superficial evaluations and hasty judgments, even among more knowledgeable individuals.
The institution of architectural competition can, however, achieve many things. The search for suitable solutions through architectural contests can yield unexpected, innovative results that financially motivated investors might not dare to envision. Ultimately, even an unrealized competitive experiment can push the boundaries of architectural thinking. And "thinking" is naturally refined through "speaking," which is always automatically triggered after the announcement of the competition results.
Unfortunately, competitions remain just a tool in our imperfect hands and minds, and therefore their critical reflection remains perpetually desirable. However, as it turns out, neither expert periodicals nor the competition organizers themselves are capable of sufficiently satisfying this need. The number of exhibitions and printed presentations is minimal, costs are high, and the form is inadequate. How to deal with this fact?
For these reasons, a discussion with interested participants, whose insights could bring inspiring impulses even for those less involved, presents itself as an optimal platform to open the topic of architectural competitions.
