Lecture Japanese Home by Karel Vranovský on March 18, 2019, at 5:30 PM at Křížkovského Street 12 in Olomouc will introduce participants to some interesting aspects of Japanese architecture and the circumstances that have shaped it over the centuries. As a tool, we will mainly look into the architecture of ordinary Japanese family homes, which we believe can reveal more about the world of Japanese life than many a grand palace or temple. We would like to reflect on the natural conditions, cultural customs, philosophy, and the ordinary everyday reality that is mirrored in the walls and pillars of the houses, which provide protection to ordinary Japanese people today just as they did five hundred years ago. The theme of the lecture is less about architecture itself and more about the relationship of Japanese architecture to culture, environment, and everyday life.

The lecture will be conducted in English.

Karel Vranovský studies cultural anthropology and general linguistics at Palacký University in Olomouc. He has been interested in Japanese culture since he was fourteen, initially casually, and today mainly from an anthropological perspective. His interest in the specific search for connections between architecture, culture, and aesthetics is largely due to his long-term collaboration with his brother Jan, who studied architecture at the University of Tokyo and now works as an architect and photographer in Japan.
