Svatopluk Sládeček, New Work

“Bouda, figurka a relief”

Lecture cycle “Brno in Prague”

In 2007, KRUH will again focus on Czech architecture in its lecture activities after a long time. It will invite several architects from Brno to Prague. The selected theme was already foreshadowed last year by the successful lecture of the Brno architect Zdeněk Fránek.

The lecture series will map the current work of architects living and working in Brno and will present Brno as a - in the best sense of the word - province that has been able to maintain its own identity and traditions due to its distance from so-called centers. The connection to traditions is particularly important in the case of Brno - a city whose modern architecture was an important formative aspect in the 20th century. The character of the city was significantly influenced by a relatively short, but fruitful interwar period. We can consider this time as the “golden” era of Brno architecture, whose significance even transcends the borders of the city.

In the early 90s, it seemed that emerging architects from Brno had their doors open more outside the city. However, from the mid-90s onwards, their architecture began to be realized even in Brno itself and often came to the forefront of Czech architectural events. Brno thus becomes again a kind of “regional metropolis” of Czech architecture.

The lectures of the BRNO IN PRAGUE cycle will take place every first Thursday of the month at 19:30 in the cultural hall of the Main Train Station in Prague. More information can be found at www.kruh.info.

New Work, Svatopluk Sládeček

Svatopluk Sládeček is among the very original architects. His architecture, which he himself calls Figurative, is characterized by a very distinctive form, figure, figurine.
Svatopluk Sládeček was born in 1969 in Zlín. He studied at VŠUP, initially in industrial design and then architecture. He completed his studies in 1994. While still in school, in 1991 he founded the studio New Work with three colleagues. Architect Svatopluk Sládeček is the only original member who remains in the studio. Currently, the studio New Work consists of Svatopluk Sládeček, Daniela Babíčková, Alice Šimečková, Petra Vašková, and Pavel Velecký. In 1998 and 2005, the studio received honorary recognition from GP OA for the Town Hall buildings in Šarovy and the Observation Tower at Brdy, and in 2003 the GP OA award for the interior of a villa in Kroměříž. Other realizations include, for example, a family house in Rajhrad, awarded by Bertelsmann as the House of the Year 2004, a multifunctional building in the gap on Nám. Míru in Zlín, and the infill development in Hradební, Františkánské, and Krátké streets in Uh. Hradiště. In 2005, the New Work studio, in collaboration with KGVU Zlín, held an exhibition on Figurative architecture for beginners.
