We invite you to another lecture in the In Focus: Berlin series prepared by Miroslav Pazdera.
Germany, as we know it today, is the result of geopolitical upheavals related to the year 1989. After a diplomatic marathon, the path to the "unification" of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, as well as West Berlin and Berlin, the capital of the GDR, was finally cleared. Moreover, 45 years after the end of the Second World War, caused by Germany, Berlin once again became the capital. The architectures that have emerged in the city since then practically invite interpretation like coffee grounds. However, sometimes things are quite clear: 30 years after the "reunification," a new building named Humboldt Forum, a 1:1 replica of the Berlin residence of the German emperors, which was demolished more than half a century ago, has been completed on the site considered to be the "center of the republic." In the reincarnation of the palace, which has now transformed into a cultural forum and universal museum, controversial artifacts from what is now referred to as "colonial contexts" can also be seen.
The resurrection of the Berlin Imperial Palace literally crowns the development of three decades. However, a number of other stories can be told from the German capital—or rather from its surroundings, from the Hameau de la Reine of the lesser nobility. c/o now dares to bring several provocative reports about it from the perspective of a small, modest architectural practice on the periphery of world history.
c/o now is an office founded and operating in Berlin. It focuses on collective practice and engages in the thinking, planning, and realization of architecture and cities, as well as critically evaluating the results of this work in theory and education. Since October 2021, c/o now has been working with students at Kunstuniversität Linz as part of a collective pedagogical residency. c/o now consists of: Andrijana Ivanda, Duy An Tran, Ksenija Zdešar, Tobias Hönig, Markus Rampl, Paul Reinhardt.
