Bratislava Up & Down

The Architecture Days will take place in Bratislava for the fifth time on May 28 and 29, 2010. As part of this event, the Architecture Department of the Institute of Construction and Architecture of the Slovak Academy of Sciences is organizing open house days in collaboration with the Austrian association Architekturtage 2010. From Friday to Saturday, numerous architectural works and architectural studios will be accessible to the public in Vienna and Bratislava.
This year's Architecture Days in Bratislava will be held under the title Bratislava Up & Down.
The vertical development of the city, whether up or down, is a manifestation of modern intensification of urban development and a current alternative to extensive development and the continuous occupation of new and new areas. Vertical structures influence the skyline of the city and have been a widely discussed topic in Bratislava in recent years. The underground spaces, on the other hand, are mostly unseen but are an essential counterpart to the towers, which can be equally attractive from an architectural or structural perspective. Under the concept of Bratislava Up & Down, we would like to draw attention to those high-rise landmarks and underground spaces that are simultaneously considered exceptional architectural works.
During the two days of May, participants in the Architecture Days will visit 17 remarkable architectural works accompanied by architects, architectural historians, or structural engineers. They will ascend to the highest floors of residential buildings, penetrate observation platforms of towers, and descend into the mysterious undergrounds of buildings, places of religious cult, or urban infrastructure. They will thus discover not only remarkable architectural solutions but also the capital city from an unusual perspective.
The tours of architectural works will, as in every year, be complemented by visits to architectural studios of significant Bratislava creators. There, event participants will get acquainted with the architect’s work and glimpse into the concepts that are still being born on their desks.

The Architecture Days will officially open on Friday, May 28, 2010, at 18:00 with a public memorial In Memory of Štefan Svetko on the rooftop terrace under the pyramid of the Slovak Radio building, Mýtna Street 1, Bratislava.
