Zlín - The Zlín town hall today opened the historic building Malá scéna to the public, which has undergone extensive reconstruction. The building, constructed in a functionalist style, now features two new halls intended not only for theater but also for various other alternative genres. The costs of the repairs reached approximately 60 million crowns, of which nearly nine million were provided by the state. This was announced to journalists today by Deputy Mayor Irena Ondrová.
One of the significant preserved Baťa landmarks in the city was established in 1936 as a Commercial and Social House according to the design of architect Vladimír Karfík. The city began repairs on Malá scéna four years ago. The facade was gradually repaired, and the windows were restored. Last year, the town hall started extensive renovations of the interior spaces. For example, there is a completely new underground extension that serves as a storage area for costumes and props, dressing rooms for actors, sanitary facilities, and an air conditioning machine room.
This year, workers and architects continued with the interior modifications. "It was a great challenge for us, as this is an important building from the interwar period. We tried to preserve not only the original authenticity but also to create an environment based on contemporary requirements for theater," stated architect Pavel Martinek, who collaborated on the project with his father Pavel Martinek.
Malá scéna, which is partly used by the Elementary Art School, now has two halls thanks to the renovation. A large theater hall has been preserved in the basement of the building, with a capacity reduced from the original 340 seats to approximately 260. A new hall was created on the first floor, which does not have a fixed seating arrangement. The capacity of the smaller hall is up to 130 people. The modified spaces, which previously housed shops, will now serve as a café and a grocery store.
Malá scéna originally included a cinema, shops, a reading room and study room, a café, and a gym. It underwent its first changes in the mid-1940s when the space of the café was divided into individual classrooms for the art school, and large windows were replaced with smaller wooden ones. In the 1950s, extensions were added for the needs of the theater, which diminished the architectural value of the building.
