Brno - At the age of 95, the Brno sculptor Sylva Lacinová passed away on Sunday. This was reported to ČTK today by the sculptor's long-time friend Alena Veselá. "Sylva was an incredibly gentle person, very friendly and immensely talented. She was a wonderful person, I liked her very much," said former rector of JAMU Alena Veselá, who had known Lacinová since childhood.
Lacinová was born in Brno and after graduating from a real gymnasium and evening drawing and modeling courses at the School of Arts and Crafts in Brno, she studied at the School of Art in Zlin under Vincenc Makovský, and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Karel Pokorný. At Vincenc Makovský's studio, she also received her first job from 1950 to 1951.
Sylva Lacinová's work is an unmistakable part of the streets of Brno; for example, she is the author of the sculpture Hospitality at the International hotel on Veselá street, the sculpture Maternity located at the entrance to the Gynecology and Obstetrics Pavilion in the Faculty Hospital in Brno Bohunice, and she also contributed to the sculptural decoration of the Scala cinema. Her work is part of the public space in Ostrava, Boskovice and other cities as well.
"Her creation is characterized by decorative values, a sense of reality, as well as the ability to find an impressive modern form corresponding to the time she intensely experienced. This is evidenced by works accompanied by lyrical poetry, gentle humor, and serious spiritual contemplation about the meaning of human existence. This ethos was especially embodied in the sculpture with the theme of motherhood, through which she permanently entered the consciousness of Czech art of the second half of the 20th century," characterized Lacinová's work for ČTK Jiří Hlušička, an art critic and founder of the Moravian Gallery.
In 1997, Lacinová was awarded the City of Brno Prize for lifetime achievement.
