At the age of 69, car designer Václav Král passed away on Wednesday. Jiří Král, his son, told ČTK. Václav Král was a legend among designers, symbolizing Czech automotive design for over three decades. In the early 1970s, he introduced himself to the public as a creator of racing cars bearing the Metalex brand. He created the bodies of racing cars such as the Formula Easter and Mondial, Škoda Buggy, and Spider. Since then, he has designed over 20 vehicles. Among the most famous are the sports car Dioss Rebel and the luxury Tatra Prezident. Recently, Král focused on the development of small city vehicles, but his name is more associated with high-performance sports cars. He is the creator of the car that achieved the historically first Czech national speed record. With his Supertatra, he was created by Stanislav Bold at the former airport of Hradčany near Ralsko. The car with an eight-cylinder Tatra engine with a volume of four liters then produced an output of 320 horsepower and reached a speed of 260 kilometers per hour at the end of the finishing straight. Born in Ostrava, Václav Král graduated in 1956 from the Higher Industrial School of Automotive and Aviation in Mladá Boleslav, where he specialized in the construction of automotive bodies. Until 1969, he worked in the body construction of AZNP Mladá Boleslav, later at the Energy Research Institute. From 1983, he was self-employed. Since the early 1990s, he collaborated with his son Jiří, and in 1994 began teaching in the field of Vehicle Design at the Czech Technical University. Since the late 1960s, Václav Král collaborated mainly with automotive manufacturers and engineering offices, publishing his designs, including his own illustrations. He organized several solo exhibitions and received numerous awards in design competitions. Among other things, Král is the author of a replica of the historical Porsche 356 from 1950 for the new National Technical Museum in Munich. In working on this commission, he proceeded in a similar manner to Ferdinand Porsche half a century ago, as he also initially created a full-size model of his car from wood.
