Prague/Brno - The border bridge over the Dyje River on the route from Břeclav to Vienna has become the best European steel structure for road and rail transport, succeeding in the European Steel Bridge Awards 2018 competition. Trains have been operating on it since the summer of 2016, at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. The bridge is 130 meters long, the Railway and Transport Administration (SŽDC) reported in a press release.
The bridge has no pillars in the river; it is a single-span structure. The load-bearing structure is steel with a deck that forms a trough for the track bed. The main beams act as a so-called reticulated arch. Their beams are reinforced with a non-rigid arch, and the space between the arch and the beam is filled with a system of ties in a reticulated arrangement. The width of the bridge is almost 17 meters, and its weight is 1900 tons. The appearance of the bridge was designed by architect Václav Kocián, and this solution was used for the first time in the Czech Republic.
A total of 35 bridge constructions from 19 European countries were submitted to the European Steel Bridge Awards 2018, from which a seven-member international jury selected winners in two main categories - Road and Rail Bridges and Footbridges and Cycle Paths.
