The exhibition will showcase projects from the European architectural competition

Prague - The competition designs by young architects for Prague and Pilsen, created as part of the eighth edition of the Europan competition, will be on display at the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery in Prague. In Pilsen, architects addressed the development of the public transport company's area on Cukrovarská Street. In the capital, they coincidentally designed a new use for the former Dejvice garages of the public transport company. The exhibition will last from May 15 to May 25.
For Pilsen, the expert jury evaluated 23 studies, while for Prague, there were 14. The President of the Czech Europan committee, Milan Hon, lamented at today's press conference that the participation of Czech architects was relatively low. Eight proposals were submitted for both areas.
The winning study for Pilsen was prepared by a five-member team of Spanish architects who proposed parallel-arranged apartment buildings. The jury praised their sensitive placement on the site. According to the winning proposal by a group of four French architects, there should be one continuous building of the residential complex on the site of the former Dejvice garages.
Milan Svoboda, the director of the concept and development department of Pilsen, stated that the public transport company area is still in use and it will take some time before moving out. He believes the area is ideal for housing and recreational facilities. He will strive to ensure that the first discussions focus on the construction of the winning proposal.
Bohumil Beránek, the head of the development department of Prague 6, was more skeptical about the potential development of the garage land according to the highest-rated study. The Dejvice garages are owned by the public transport company, and his interest is to sell the property well, he said.
In the current edition of the Europan competition, young architects could propose developments for 74 sites in 19 European countries. The competition juries accepted 1,618 studies. They awarded 61 first prizes, each accompanied by a reward of 12,000 euros (approximately 340,000 crowns), and 82 second prizes, with a cash reward of half that amount.
This is the third time the competition has been held in the Czech Republic. In the past, participants could develop studies for part of Smíchov and for the area in Libeň.
