Karlovy Vary - The leadership of the city of Karlovy Vary disapproves of the plan by Eden Group to build a large hotel complex next to the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. Deputy Mayor Tomáš Hybner therefore proposes a change to the city's zoning plan for the area. This measure could prevent the construction, states today's Právo in its regional supplement.

The city's vision is to create a colonnade and a relaxation zone in the area. The city has already discussed the zoning plan change with an architect and the building authority. According to Hybner, there are several interesting projects. "For example, the owners of the Hotel Jean de Carro, which stands right above the land, are offering park landscaping solutions with access to their hotel," said Hybner.
Eden Group owns about 90 percent of the land. Originally, part of the land was owned by the Ministry of Culture through its company Balnex, but it sold its share at auction this summer to Eden Group. The city did not participate in the auction. "We learned about the auction when it was too late. We were negotiating with Eden Group to purchase the land, but they did not agree," Hybner said.
Mayor Veronika Vlková stated that changes to the zoning plan are not a simple matter. She is also in favor of building a park or colonnade, rather than a hotel. The city also has concerns that the construction could violate the thermal plate, under which healing springs are hidden. Although the city owns 490 square meters in the area, this will not help them. "Compared to the area of Eden Group's land, it's minimal. Eden Group can do without it, which is why they didn't even ask for its purchase," Hybner added.
Eden Group does not want to comment on the city's plans for now. However, reportedly, they do not intend to build in the area near the church in the near future. "We need to familiarize ourselves officially with the city's plans and hold a discussion with its leadership," said Jan Motlík, the sales director of Eden Group.
