Terezín (Litoměřicko) - In Terezín in the Litoměřice region, four historical buildings will be reconstructed over the next three years with the help of a grant of 500 million crowns from European Union funds. The buildings Kavalír 2, Retranchement 5, Artillery Barracks, and Riding Hall will primarily host museums and historical exhibits. The contract for the grant was signed today in Terezín by the governor of the Ústí nad Labem Region, Jana Vaňhová, and the Minister of Culture, Václav Riedlbauch.

The grant recipient is the interest association Terezín - City of Change, founded by the Ústí nad Labem Region and the town of Terezín. The project for the revival of historical monuments in Terezín is focused on exemplary restoration of pre-selected buildings. In addition to historical exhibits, crafts demonstrations and military training will be displayed during special themed tours. Various local interest historical organizations and cooperating museums will assist in this effort. All buildings are expected to be reconstructed by 2013.
The grant was awarded from the Integrated Operational Program in the area of national support for the use of cultural heritage potential. The Ministry of Culture is the intermediary for the grant. Terezín is on the candidate list for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. "That is why we strive to achieve the revival of significant monuments and to expand awareness of the town of Terezín as a well-preserved military fortress through the implementation of the project," stated the governor.
Work on the Kavalír 2 building will begin with the reconstruction of so-called green roofs, followed by the reconstruction of the entire structure. An Artillery Museum will be established there in cooperation with the Military Historical Institute. Miloslav Kubíček from the Civic Association of Friends of the History of Terezín told ČTK that a building permit for the work on the green roofs has already been issued, and the permit for the reconstruction of the building is expected in the coming days. Work is expected to start this year.
In the Retranchement 5 building, a Center for the Restoration and Use of Military Fortress Systems will be established. It will map their development, gradual restoration, including procedures. A permanent exhibition of military life in the 18th century will also be created there. The Riding Hall is intended to serve its original purpose, namely for training historical military cavalry, after its reconstruction. The reconstructed Artillery Barracks is expected to host, among others, the Leo Beck Foundation. Studies for these buildings are currently being prepared, and a building permit for the reconstruction should be issued within a year.
Terezín was built as a fortress town between 1780 and 1790 as a military defense against Prussian invasions. It represents the pinnacle of bastion-type fortress building. During World War II, the Nazis misused Terezín, establishing a Jewish ghetto and concentration camp there. Until the 1990s, many buildings were used by the army, but most have deteriorated since its departure. In recent years, several attempts have been made to revitalize the town, but they failed due to lack of interest or funding. Only now has there been a consensus that this is a new beginning that will bring new life to the town.
