Plzeň - In Plzeň, the reconstruction of the central Republic Square has been completed after more than two years. The entire 1.5-hectare area has been newly paved with stone paving made of reddish-brown Italian porphyry. Problems with the paving, which initially cracked, delayed the construction by several months. It was originally supposed to be completed in December 2007. Petr Rund, the deputy mayor, said this today to ČTK. The exact costs of the reconstruction will be available to the town hall next week; they were estimated at 155 million crowns before the start of the project. "A significant change is the pavement, and the fact that the square has a reinforced area for heavy machinery, for example, when bringing in the Christmas tree; there are anchor points and electrical poles for greater comfort during events," said Rund. The historic toilets and the refreshments area above them have also been renovated. The adjoining garden that serves as a summer terrace has also been updated. The square, which is to become a quiet zone with a look corresponding to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, has had benches returned. During the reconstruction, a well with a diameter of 2.5 meters and a depth of 21.4 meters was accidentally uncovered, of which no one was aware until then. The well likely dates from the early 19th century; according to experts, it was probably covered in connection with the establishment of Neoclassical fountains in the square in 1832. The fountains are another element that should return to the square. There has been discussion about them in Plzeň for several years. A year ago, councilors approved that designs by architect Ondřej Císler with the names Angel, Camel, and Greyhound would be located at the corners of the square. Construction of the first of them could begin this year.
