In K.Varech, activists once again blocked the construction of the hall, and they face penalties

Karlovy Vary - In Karlovy Vary today, a group of activists and members of the petition committee against the construction of a new multifunctional hall again blocked access to the construction site for about an hour. This time, a police patrol was called to the scene to identify the participants in the protest. The activists now face the possibility that the city or construction companies will seek damages from them. This was announced to ČTK by Deputy Mayor Petr Keřka.
Opponents of the construction chose a time when a special concrete mix was being delivered to the foundations at the construction site. If it is not transported to the site in time, it becomes unusable, Keřka stated. "These are serious matters; every action has its consequences," he stated. "We will wait until the contractor assesses the damages and then hand everything over to legal representation to start claiming damages," he added.
Activists from the petition committee have blocked the entrance to the construction site for the third time. The first two actions went by without serious incidents and neither was assisted by the police or security guards. The construction workers requested police intervention only today. Members of the petition committee are demanding that the city halt the construction, which is estimated to cost around one billion crowns. They argue that the city will become unsustainably indebted and question the multifunctionality of the hall. According to them, it should only serve hockey. However, the city management disagrees.
Work continues on the construction of the multifunctional hall, which began on February 1 and is being carried out by a consortium of companies Syner, Baustav, and Metrostav, with earthworks continuing and the foundations being completed. The hall is expected to be finished in two years. Currently, there are two petitions circulating in the city. The first, demanding a halt to construction, has been signed by about 3,000 people. The second, which supports the construction, has been signed by approximately the same number of people.
