JABLONEC NAD NISOU - The new granite fountain, which will rise during the next year in the Lower Square in Jablonec nad Nisou, will be modern and simple. Its author is a student of the local Secondary School of Applied Arts, who won an architectural competition announced by the city. Deputy Mayor Petr Karásek told ČTK today that the expert commission selected from 19 proposals. According to him, the city hall had been interested in building a fountain several years ago. However, the proposals received at that time were rather distinguished by their tastelessness. The city did not want to give up its vision, but this time preferred students over renowned architects. The winning project was designed by fourth-year student Šárka Kuncová. "I have been working on the idea for about five months. The fountain will certainly be beautiful and will enrich the city," she noted. The new dominant feature of the square - the fountain consists of a long granite block set into the slope of the square. Its front side will be about 1.3 meters high. "This is to ensure a good view of the surface of the flowing water," explained Deputy Mayor Radovan Louda. The office has about one million crowns allocated for the fountain in its budget. The new fountain in the Lower Square will not be the only water feature in the city. A fountain will also adorn the entrance to the newly constructed Eurocenter. The original Jablonec fountain used to stand in the Upper Square.
