Chabařovice - In Chabařovice in the Ústí region, a dilapidated steam mill is being renovated, the reconstruction will cost nearly 40 million crowns. The building will serve as a service center and office space. This was stated by the secretary of the town hall, Věra Krepindlová, to the Czech News Agency.

The contractor, Metrostav, is expected to complete the renovation in the spring. The project is divided into two phases, the second phase includes the modification of the square with a gazebo. "The funds for the first phase were saved from the positive economic results of the town of Chabařovice in recent years and approximately 55 percent will be supported by a grant from the Ministry of Industry and Trade," Krepindlová said.

The building has been designated as a brownfield and has not been used for years. "As part of the reconstruction, the eastern and southern parts of the building were preserved as raw structures, while other parts were completed," the secretary added. According to her, after the repairs are completed, the building will house a service center and offices. A café is expected to open on the ground floor.

The original water mill was established in 1810 by converting a wool fulling mill. In 1864, it was transformed into a steam industrial complex, at that time the property was owned by Emanuel Kühnel, who was also the mayor of the town. Thirty-five years later, electricity began to be used in the mill. The communist regime nationalized the mill in the late 1940s, and after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the owners changed. "Although they had plans for its reconstruction, these were not completed for various reasons," the secretary added.
