Brno - In Brno, on Krkoškova Street, tree felling of approximately 60 trees, mostly linden, will begin on Tuesday. The reason is the reconstruction of a water supply system that is over 100 years old. Miroslav Procházka from the Imos company, which will carry out the reconstruction for about 120 million, informed the journalists today about the felling. A portion of the residents on the street opposed the felling. According to Jaromír Peška from Brno Waterworks and Sewage, the water pipes are in poor condition and pose a risk of failure. Instead of the felled trees, 88 different trees will be planted after the reconstruction.
The water pipes date back to 1912. Peška pointed out that the company generally records various failures across Brno, leading to problems with the supply of drinking water, which is why it is necessary to reconstruct the old water supply system. Some people from the street opposed the felling, while others desired the removal of the trees, said the mayor of the Brno-sever district, Martin Maleček. He mentioned that it was considered whether the trees could be preserved; ultimately, however, it is necessary to cut all of them down. "I tried until the last moment to keep the trees there. But we found that there was no other way. We will be very sorry; I have lived there since childhood, and it will feel like a death in the family, but the extent of the reconstruction is incompatible with the existence of the trees,” said one of the residents of the street, Petra Vašutová from the Krkoškova Association, which fought against the felling. "Reason won, and we have the promise that the street will be new,” Vašutová added.
According to the director of the Public Greenery of the city of Brno, Jozef Kasala, most of the trees are healthy. "The roots go under the sidewalks and would be disturbed by the connections. After the reconstruction, the stability of the trees would be at risk,” Kasala said. Mayor Maleček recalled a recent incident of a linden tree falling on a nearby street, which landed on two cars. A family had just exited one of the vehicles moments before.
Nearly 60 trees will be cut down, most of which are decades-old lindens, along with a few maples. Instead, there will be 88 trees planted in the area, primarily non-fruit cherry and pear trees. According to Maleček, an additional 150 trees will be planted throughout the Brno-sever district.
The reconstruction of the water supply and sewage system concerns Krkoškova, Zátiší, and part of Fügnerova Street in the section between Krkoškova and Merhautova. The investment will affect nearly 750 meters of sewerage and more than 1920 meters of water supply line. This includes the reconstruction of 75 sewer connections and the replacement of 70 water supply connections. In Krkoškova Street, builders will relocate the gas pipeline and the operators' cables.
