Brno - This year, after years of planning, construction will begin on Chovánek for children in need in Brno. The new space will be obtained by the Brno Children's Center (formerly the infants' home), which currently occupies unsuitable villas in Pisárky and Žabovřesky. The construction costs are preliminarily estimated at 140 million crowns. The city hall now wants to select a construction firm, said Mayor's assistant Ladislav Macek (ČSSD) today to ČTK.
Chovánek is to be built on Vejrostova Street in Brno-Bystrc. The city hall also considered Líšeň due to high costs for network relocations that need to be done in Bystrc before construction begins. In the end, however, according to Macek, the Bystrc solution won. In Líšeň, the city hall would have to buy land, and thus there would be no savings with the construction in that area.
In the new building with 60 places, social workers and educators will care for homeless children in family units. The facility should also provide short-term stays for children with disabilities, for whom parents otherwise care at home. Stays for mothers before secretive births, an information center, and a counseling service are also planned.
The city hall anticipates that some of the construction costs will be recouped. The value of the villas that the city could sell after relocating the children's center has been estimated by experts at 110 million crowns.
