Prague - The Millesim Palace in the center of Prague, belonging to Charles University, opened today after reconstruction. The baroque building on Celetná Street will house the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Philosophy, as well as the university information center UK Point.

The university has been using the premises since 1990, said university spokesperson Václav Hájek. The baroque palace, which is protected as a historical monument, stands on the site where two Romanesque houses originally were. A Gothic house later grew on their foundations. A wall with Gothic windows can be seen in one of the classrooms. Around 1756, the building was renovated. The palace from the peak of the baroque period has preserved several rooms with vaulted ceilings and rich stucco decorations. Portions of the floors and doors are also original. "In the 19th century, a noble casino and luxury restaurant operated in the palace," added Hájek.

The large baroque hall has undergone restoration, which expanded it by half a meter. The wall cladding has been removed. In the attic, under the wooden beams, most of which are original, a study room and library will be created.

The oldest part of the building is the Romanesque cellar. It is planned to have exhibition spaces. The courtyard now has a glass roof, allowing it to be used all year round. Spaces that will serve commercial purposes are still being finished.

Charles University is investing in the construction, repairs, and renovations of various buildings and their equipment. This year, according to previous information, it is expected to spend about three billion crowns on them. The funds come from the university's budget as well as from grants from the Ministry of Education and the European Union.
