Hradec Králové - The University of Hradec Králové (UHK) has begun construction on the building of the Faculty of Science UHK in its campus opposite the university hospital. The construction work costing 345 million crowns should be completed by the end of September 2016. Almost one hundred million crowns will be spent on equipment, and the faculty could start using the building from September 2017, UHK Chancellor Ondřej Tikovský informed ČTK today. The new building will connect to the already existing neighboring buildings of the university campus. In addition to lecture halls and offices, the building will offer spaces for scientific work and research activities. "It will consist mainly of modern and technologically demanding laboratories or chemical storages, which in the case of the Department of Biology will be arranged in so-called hygiene loops to prevent contamination of the surrounding environment by substances used in experiments," said Tikovský. The capacity of the building will accommodate more than a thousand students and approximately one hundred seventy employees. UHK Rector Josef Hynek stated that students and university employees will move into the new building from several buildings. "We will either be able to sell those or offer them to other parts of the university that are currently renting. This way, we will save resources and increase the efficiency of the entire school’s operation," Hynek stated. About 700 students are studying at the Faculty of Science at the University of Hradec Králové. The University of Hradec Králové campus currently consists of two buildings serving the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Informatics and Management UHK, which were gradually opened in 1997 and 2008. The currently under-construction building is not expected to be the last building on the campus. "In the future, a sports hall will follow the educational buildings, which is being prepared as a shared facility for activities of all universities in Hradec and the public," said Tikovský.
